Artists Training Session: Incorporating Access for Outdoor Work

Access

On Wednesday 6th February 2019 Without Walls delivered a training session designed to offer practical examples and tools to help artists think about a more inclusive approach when devising work for an outdoor context.

The session was aimed at the 2019 Without Walls commissioned artists and at the Without Walls partners.

The aim of the Training session was to:

  • provide artists with an overview and a better understanding of the social model of disability
  • inspire artists to think of accessibility as a creative tool they can use when devising their shows
  • share examples of embedded access in outdoor shows, challenges and processes
  • share insights in what to consider when thinking about accessibility
  • offer a practical session where artists can identify the existing barriers their shows present and think about ways to overcome them
  • signpost artists to some of the most useful existing resources and toolkits

Speakers included:

  • Helen Eastman, writer and director of Bicycle Boy

This bicycle-powered show was commissioned by Without Walls in 2018 and received support to enhance accessibility for wheelchair users.

  • Nathan Geering, CEO of Rationale Method

An unusual approach to Audio Description that was born from a desire to stimulate audiences by using beatboxing and verbal percussion to describe movement.

  • Philippa Cross, General Manager of Talking Birds

Originally created to respond to site-specific work, The Difference Engine is an app that provides immediate captioning to one’s smartphone.

Daryl Beeton from Wild N Beets and Daryl Beeton Productions chaired the session.
