Blueprint 2023: Meet the artists

12 May 2023

A performer wearing all black is moving with a sheer red sheet that is dramatically draped over their face and right arm.

6 artists and companies join our annual Blueprint programme, which brings together a diverse mix of in-development outdoor arts for 2023.

Our yearly Blueprint programme is designed to support research and development costs of new outdoor touring work. In our current climate, early stage support is more important than ever. This support will allow artists to take risks, push boundaries, develop vital new works and continue to challenge the status quo.

Blueprint celebrates innovation and seeks to expand the possibilities of what outdoor arts can be. This year’s programme sees ambitious ideas that place everyone at their heart; through innovative inclusion of accessible practice, shining a light on important stories, asking questions about our identities and relationships and celebrating cultures and traditions which link to our collective histories and identities.

The final selection features some of the most exciting new and established artists and companies working in outdoor arts. Genres represented include circus (from Chinese poles, to aerial work, to a giant wheel), dance and installation blended with poetry and film. Themes range from celebrations of women in West African culture; authentic Indian village experiences with Gujarati folk dance; belonging: how we hinder and uplift each other; the tension between individual identities and collective humanity; challenging stigma around HIV and creating immersive and sensory movement experiences for audiences who may not always be considered.
